Trent University (TU) is a medium-sized (uniRank enrollment range: 7.000-7,999 students) coeducational higher education institution located in Trent, Ontario. Trent University (TU) offers courses and programs in a variety of fields that lead to officially recognized higher education degrees such as bachelor’s, master’s, and doctorate degrees.
Trent University is a public liberal arts university in Peterborough, Ontario, with a satellite campus in Oshawa serving the Durham Region. Trent University is famous for its Oxbridge college system and small class sizes.
Trent’s colleges: Champlain, Lady Eaton, Catharine Parr Traill, Otonabee, and Peter Gzowski, are principally responsible for its operations. Residence halls, dining halls, and student governments are all unique to each college. The student government (Cabinet) and its committees collaborate with the College Office and dons to plan and deliver a variety of events for both non-resident and resident members, including visiting scholars, artists, musicians, and scientists; College dinners and dances; Fall and Winter College Weekend; and intramural co-ed competitions in a variety of sports. Trent University offers graduate degrees, despite the fact that it is primarily an undergraduate institution.
Trent University was established in 1962–63 as a result of the efforts of a citizens’ committee interested in establishing a university to serve the City of Peterborough and the surrounding counties. The committee chose University of Toronto Dean Thomas H. B. Symons to chair the academic planning committee, and Symons went on to become the university’s first president.
Trent University’s Symons campus, named for founding president Thomas Symons, is located on the banks of the Otonabee River in Peterborough’s northeast corner. Champlain College, Lady Eaton College, Bata Library, Chemistry Building, and the Faryon bridge that spans the Otonabee were designed by Canadian architect Ron Symons, as were the Symons campus plan and original college structures.
The Peterborough campus has about 9000 undergraduate students and over 800 graduate students, while the Trent University Durham GTA site on Thornton Road in Oshawa has over 1 900 full- and part-time students. Trent Excalibur represents the institution in Canadian Interuniversity Sport.
Trent University was founded in 1957 as a consequence of a community conversation regarding the need for a post-secondary institution in the Trent Valley. The campaign for a post-secondary institution in Peterborough coincided with the Ontario government’s policy of creating new universities and expanding existing institutions in response to population pressures and the belief that higher education was critical to individual and societal social justice and economic productivity.
