Augustino Lyatonga Mrema is a Tanzanian politician who was once the country’s minister for home affairs. He was born on the 31st of December 1944. After changing his party allegiance in February 1995 he initially joined NCCR-Mageuzi before going on to Tanzania Labour Party (TLP), where he was eventually appointed Party Chairman.

Mrema had his basic and secondary education in Moshi from 1955 to 1963. After that, he attended St. Patrick Teachers training college in Moshi, which is also located in Moshi. He completed his secondary education there in 1965. In 1968, Mrema participated in the O-level examinations held by Cambridge University. After completing his studies at the Kivukoni Political Education College, he was transferred to the Marangu Training Center for additional instruction.

Since 1966, Mrema has served in the Tanzanian government, the National Security Organization, and the CCM party. During that time, he has held the following five positions:

Augustino Mrema Political career

Even though Mrema has run for president in every election held in Tanzania since the country adopted a multiparty system in the early 1990s, the beginning of his political career was in 1985 when he attempted to run for the seat of a member of parliament in the district of Kilimanjaro that he was born and raised in.

His bid to run for office was rejected by the High Court, and it wasn’t until 1987 that he was finally acknowledged as the victor following a protracted legal battle. In 1990, there was not much competition for the position, therefore he was able to keep it. Because he was a member of parliament, the president was allowed to nominate him to a number of different cabinet roles. In 1995, Mrema parted ways with the CCM and joined the National Convention for Construction and Reform-Mageuzi, a newly formed political party. In the first election in which candidates may choose between several parties, which took place in 1995, he ran as a candidate for the National Convention for Construction and Reform-Mageuzi (NCCR-Mageuzi) party and received 27.77% of the vote.

This time, he ran on the ticket of the TLP and placed third, behind the incumbent President Benjamin Mkapa of the Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) party and Ibrahim Lipumba of the Civic United Front (CUF). He received 7.80 percent of the vote.

Mrema finished fourth out of ten candidates in the TLP presidential election that took place on December 14, 2005, garnering 0.75 percent of the vote. Mrema was running for the TLP presidency for a second time. At this moment, he had already been appointed by the president to serve as chairman of the parole board from 2016 until 2019.

Mrema is from the Chaga tribe and lives in Kiraracha Village, which is located close to Mount Kilimanjaro. He is the second oldest of the five children in the family.
