Augustino Mrema Political career

Even though Mrema has run for president in every election held in Tanzania since the country adopted a multiparty system in the early 1990s, the beginning of his political career was in 1985 when he attempted to run for the seat of a member of parliament in the district of Kilimanjaro that he was born and raised in.

His bid to run for office was rejected by the High Court, and it wasn’t until 1987 that he was finally acknowledged as the victor following a protracted legal battle. In 1990, there was not much competition for the position, therefore he was able to keep it. Because he was a member of parliament, the president was allowed to nominate him to a number of different cabinet roles. Between the years 1990 and 1995, Mrema served in a number of cabinet and high level government roles, including:

Former Minister of the Interior from 1990 until 1994
