5 Easy Ways to Be a Good Student and Not Get Caught Up in the College Life

College can be a lot of fun. There’s so much to do, and you are surrounded by other people your age who are also figuring out their place in the world. It’s natural that some students might let the good times get to their heads and lose focus on their real goals.

Fortunately, it isn’t too difficult to balance being social and having a drink or two with staying focused on your studies and not getting caught up in unnecessary drama.

So many new students are nervous about how they will fit in at college, what their roommates will be like, and if they will make friends. Luckily, if you keep an open mind and stay positive it is not difficult to fit in and find people who share your interests.

Once you settle into your new surroundings, it’s time to get down to business: balancing schoolwork with meeting new people.

If you find yourself struggling with staying focused on your schoolwork as opposed to going out all the time, read this article for some helpful tips on how you can be a good student without getting caught up in the college life too much!

Set up a study area and stick to it

If you have an assigned space for studying and only use that space for studying, it is much easier to stay focused and resist the temptation to socialize, play video games, or watch TV. Also, make sure that you have a limited amount of study materials. Having an excessive amount of books and papers on your desk can be very distracting and lead to being less effective. If you have to work with a group, have a separate area for this so that you don’t get distracted when you are trying to finish up on your own.

Don’t be afraid to ask for help

If you are struggling in a class, don’t be afraid to reach out to your professor or TA. Professors genuinely want to help you succeed, and they want you to get the most out of the class.

If you are having problems in your non-class related activities, there are always people you can talk to. Your roommates will most likely be friendly and approachable, and if you make friends with people in your classes, you can also reach out to them for help.

Even if you feel like you are bothering someone, don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it.

Don’t drink too much, especially at the start of the year

As exciting as the start of a new school year is, it can be tempting to drink to excess at the beginning of the year. Don’t do this.

It is good to let off steam at the beginning of the year, but don’t go overboard and make a bad decision that you will regret.

You don’t want to get a bad reputation or be kicked out of your housing because of excessive partying. Instead, go out with your friends, but keep your drinking under control.

Have a good reason for why you aren’t going out

If you want to avoid going out on a regular basis, you need to have a really good reason for why you don’t want to. If you are asked why you aren’t going out, don’t fake an excuse. Instead, have a good reason for why you aren’t going out that isn’t easily discredited.

For example, if you are asked why you aren’t going out, you could say something like, “I am studying for my chemistry test on Monday.” If you don’t have a good reason for not going out, people will start to question why you aren’t going out and force you to go along with them.

Find time to exercise regularly

College can be stressful, and regular exercise can do wonders for reducing stress and helping you sleep better at night.

Exercise is a great way to reduce your stress levels and improve your health at the same time. Exercising regularly is also a great way to relieve your stress and help you focus on your schoolwork. If you have a workout buddy, you can also make it more fun and less of a grind. Lastly, exercise can boost your productivity by as much as 16%.

Stick to a sleep schedule and show up to class on time

Getting enough sleep is key to maintaining your health and productivity. Unfortunately, many college students don’t get enough sleep, which can lead to poor health, weight gain, and anxiety.

Try to keep a consistent sleep schedule, and don’t stay up all night when you have a paper due the next day. Also, make it a priority to get to your classes on time. Being late to class is disruptive to the entire class and can also hurt your grade.
